The ROI of Generative AI: CFOs See Big Gains With Human Oversight Still Key
In less than a year, the perception of generative AI among CFOs has shifted dramatically from cautious curiosity to strategic confidence. A recent PYMNTS Intelligence survey of CFOs from major U.S. companies (each earning over $1 billion annually) reveals that nearly 90% now report a very positive ROI on generative AI initiatives, up sharply from just 27% nine months prior. The numbers signal a turning point: generative AI is no longer a speculative investment — it’s a core enabler of business value.
But while trust in AI is rising, complete autonomy remains elusive. CFOs continue to underscore the importance of human supervision, especially in high-stakes areas like financial planning, strategic decision-making, and content generation. Even in tasks where AI shows the most automation — such as generating code or producing data visualizations — the majority still view human insight as essential to ensure accuracy, relevance, and ethical guardrails.
Interestingly, areas with the highest reported gains include automated customer response (83.3%), cybersecurity and workflow management (75%), and literature summarization (73.3%) — all of which have seen exponential adoption growth. However, only 30% of companies use gen AI to generate code, and fewer than half (48.3%) are applying it to innovation in products and services — a signal that generative AI’s creative potential remains largely untapped in corporate settings.
Despite its expanding footprint, AI still faces skepticism: 22.4% of CFOs flagged the potential lack of “insightfulness” in AI outputs, while others expressed concern over data security, missing information, and biases. These lingering doubts reinforce the need for hybrid strategies that pair AI’s speed and scale with human discernment.
Generative AI is delivering measurable value — but only when integrated wisely. For CFOs and business leaders, the path forward isn’t about replacing human expertise, but enhancing it through intelligent collaboration with AI.
